Introduction

This course offers an in-depth exploration of literary traditions across various periods and genres, including fiction, classical and Renaissance poetry, and American novels. Students will study English drama from the 16th and 17th centuries, gaining insights into theatrical forms and themes during these times. The curriculum further includes studies in criticism and theory, providing tools for literary analysis. Additionally, it covers a broad range of British and American poetry and drama.

Spanning extensive historical periods, the course offers a thorough examination of literature from the long 18th, the long 19th, and the long 20th centuries. This includes an exploration of key literary developments and their socio-cultural contexts. Students will also engage with literature through the lens of world and Indian cinema, enabling exploration of critical theoretical and contextual approaches to film and theatre.Special focus areas include partition writings, which critically analyses partition of India as a major socio-historical phenomenon and assesses its reflection in Literature, and Dalit studies, which explore the literature and cultural expressions of marginalized communities. This course lays a great emphasis on dissertation, which helps the students to develop critical acumen towards research studies and conduct research in the most ethical manner.

The Department of English organised a guest lecture titled, "Diversity and Inclusion in Publishing: Current Trends and Challenges" with Ms. Vandana Bhatia Palli (Founder and Director of Highbrow Scribes Publications) as the key speaker. Mrs. Palli delivered an insightful talk on the publishing industry, delving into various aspects ranging from the publishing process to its potential as a career avenue for students. She also delved into the nuances of the publishing industry such as grammatical precision, refined language and appropriate research.The session was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically participating in the discussion.

The Effects of Social Media

A street play was presented by students of Department of English addressing the effects of social media. The play served as a powerful medium to engage the students and spark meaningful discussions. It portrayed the detrimental effects of social media and also how social media fosters global connectivity, promotes awareness of social issues, and provides a platform for creative expression. On the other hand, the play addressed challenges such as cyberbullying, addiction, misinformation, mental health struggles, and the impact on real-life relationships.

Department of English organised an academic excursion to India International Trade Fair (2024) for students. At the fair, the students explored the various social and cultural aspects across India and globe. Various stalls displayed different types of fabrics, food, quilts, skincare products, and jewellery specific to the region. The experience was a perfect blend of culture and joy, inspiring students to move beyond the boundaries of books and explore the dynamics of industry and trade on a global level.

A departmental activity on documentary screening

The Department of English organised a departmental activity on documentary screening. The documentaries were prepared by students of all batches on their experiences of excursions they undertook at Lodhi Garden, Humayun’s Tomb, Dillii Haat and Book Market. The documentaries were great presentations of their critical and analytical thinking. The activity enhanced their skills of documentation, presentation, and dwelling into the cultural and historical aspects of the sites they visited. It also introduced them to the idea of team work and collaborative effort while working on a common project.

Department of English released its fall edition of bi-annual magazine: Reflections. Centered around the theme of Boundless , the magazine is more than a creation of poems, stories, images and ideas. It is a tribute to limitless potential of a human- woman in particular. At the release event, several contributors were acknowledged and presented with certificates of appreciation.

The Department of English organised academic excursion to Humayun's Tomb and Delhi Haat.

Both the places offered a rich blend of history, culture, and craftsmanship. At Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the students explored the architectural brilliance of Mughal design, witnessing the intricate use of symmetry, and the tomb’s historical significance.

The visit deepened their understanding of Mughal history and their architectural contributions. In contrast, Delhi Haat provided a vibrant experience of India’s diverse crafts, textiles, and cuisines, where the students observed local artisans at work and learned about the cultural heritage of various states. Together, these destinations highlighted the seamless integration of art, history, and tradition in India's rich cultural fabric.

The Department of English organised an academic excursion to Lodhi Garden and two of Delhi's most iconic bookstores: Faqir-Chand Book Store and Baharilal Sons Book Store for Final year and M. A. students. At Lodhi Garden, the students explored the rich history and stunning architecture of the ancient tombs, while also enjoying the peaceful green spaces that have been a source of inspiration for many writers and scholars. The walk fostered conversations about art, history, and conservation.

The second part of the trip took the students to the heart of Delhi's literary scene—visiting legendary bookstores like Faqir-Chand Book Store and Baharilal Sons Book Store situated in Khan Market. Students discovered rare finds, classic literature, and contemporary works. Literary Festival -Lit fest

The Department of English organized a vibrant and engaging ''Literary Festival -Lit fest''. The event aimed to celebrate and showcase the literary talents of the students while fostering a sense of creativity and expression.

The Litfest was graced by the esteemed guests, Ms Anshoo Walia, Dean-Hotel Management and Ms Renu Malik, HOD Fashion Design Department, who inaugurated the event. Dr Anuja Thakar, HOD English delivered the opening address. The Litfest comprised three exciting events, each offering a unique platform for students to exhibit their literary and artistic prowess

  • Dramatic Monologue: There were 23 participants of which two were joint winners for the first prize one for second and two for third prize. In addition, 3 consolation prizes were awarded.

  • Street Play: This event with 43 participants across four teams. 9 and 8 participants from two teams respectively were adjudged first and second prize winners.

  • Paint your imagination: There were 57 participants; First, Second and Third prizes were awarded in this competition.

Swachh raho, Swasth raho, Mast raho

The street play on sanitation and hygiene was organised by the students of the Department of English on November 29 near Rohini Sector 3 local park to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and hygienic living conditions. The event aimed to engage and educate the community on practices that contribute to better health and sanitation. The participants effectively communicated the significance of adopting healthy sanitation practices.

The street play unfolded in a lively manner, engaging the audience with its vibrant performance and impactful messages. The script focused on key aspects of sanitation and hygiene, addressing issues such as open defecation and the importance of cleanliness. By addressing pertinent issues and promoting actionable solutions, the play succeeded in creating awareness and inspiring positive behavioural changes within the community.

Academic Excursion

Departmemt of English organised an academic excursion to Sundar Nursery for students on 7th November, 2023. The students delved into the rich history embedded in the architecture and explored the Mughal tombs. The Sundar Nursery in Delhi is not just a green oasis but a historical treasure trove. Dating back to the 16th century, it was originally built by the Mughals and after that the British added their touch in the early 20th century.Along with this it is serves as a housing a myriad of plant species, including some rare and endangered ones. This intersection of cultures with biodiversity conservation makes Sundar Nursery a unique educational experience for students to study not only its historical significance but botanical as well. This academic excursion was filled with fun and learning; and promised a journey through time and nature and fostered a deeper appreciation in students for the cultural and environmental tapestry woven within this historical gem.

BI Annual Magazine

The Department of English released its fall edition of bi-annual magazine: Reflections. The release event was held in the college auditorium and was attended by students, faculty members, and special guests. With Gratitude as its theme, the magazine is a repository of thought- provoking content that informs, entertains and inspires. The magazine features a wide range of articles, essays, poems, and artwork contributed by students. During the release event, several students who had contributed towards the event were recognized and awarded certificates of appreciation. Overall, the release of 'Reflections' was a great success. It provided a platform for students to showcase their creativity and talent.

Feminism and Women Empowerment

The Department of English organised a skit on "Feminism and Women Empowerment". It's aim was to showcase the gender inequalities within society through a dystopian narrative where men suffer the same ordeal women go through at every nook and corner of their lives. By reversing the gender roles, we try to question the gender norms shoveled down the throats of women by patriarchal forces within the society and also pin-point explicitly the hollowness behind the same.

Quotation Station

The Department of English organized an activity “ Quotation Station” where students were instructed to pen down literary quotes of different authors spread across various literary movements. These quotes provide the world with a ray of hope, they moralize and give deep insights into a world beyond the one we witness with our naked eyes. Not only these quotes have a metaphorical depth, they also enhance our creative faculties through sublime forms of expression. As CS Lewis says- "Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it.”

Rendezvous - The Cultural Fest 2022

Rendezvous - The Cultural Fest by the Department of English was a grand success catering for the eyes of the viewers with mesmerising performances by their students in the form of chorus and ball dance accompanied by sing-along, wordsmith, manifestation board and ink-it. It also offered the stage to all the students from different departments for activities such as that of “Tell a Tale” and “Dramatic Monologue” which did fulfil the aspirations of bringing out the talent of our stars. It was organised on December 7, 2022, with a promise to come back every year with the same zeal and enthusiasm.

Reflections - Second Fall Edition of the bi-annual Departmental Magazine

The Department of English celebrated the release of the Second Fall Edition of the bi-annual Departmental Magazine on 31st October, 2022. The Department along with the Guest of Honour, our Pro-Chancellor Sir, Mr. V.K. Aggarwal and the Chief Guest, Mr. Gaurav Vashisth came together to applaud the undivided efforts of the editorial team and also the efforts of each and every student who has contributed through their sensitive and imaginative creatives in the magazine. The magazine release event became a memorable one by the enthralling performances by the students involving the blessings through Ganesh Vandana followed by a band performance which brought a smile on everyone's faces. The event became a success and ended on a hopeful note to open more doors of opportunities for the students.

Reflections - Spring Edition, 2022

The Department of English celebrated the launch of its bi-annual magazine, "Reflections" Spring Edition, 2022 on March 30, 2022. All the editors were felicitated by honourable Pro-chancellor V. K. Aggarwal, Ms. Anshoo Walia - HOD Hospitality, Catering, Travel Tourism & Service Industry, Ms. Preeti Bhardwaj - HOD Management and Ms. Anuja Thakar - HOD Liberal Arts-English. The event began with an invocation to Goddess Saraswati, a classical dance performance and felicitation of the guests.

Educational Excursion

The English (H) students went to Nodia Haveli on an educational excursion. Students soaked the glory of culture through folk music, cultural delicacies, and activities pre-modernisation. Rendezvous with the classical heritage of Rajasthan indeed gave students a new perception.

Confluence-2021

The first of its kind “Confluence-2021”, a poetry competition organized by the Department of English, saw prominent professors, Professor Nandini C. Sen and Professor Shibani Phukan from University of Delhi graced the event and delivering their excellence along with their perspective on “transforming narratives”. The theme for the event, Suffering, Hope and Resilience struck a chord among the participants and provided them a medium to showcase their literary imagination, may be an introspection narrative.
Bringing a new behavioral aspect into learning and portraying deliverance into the new beginnings of life and addressing to common stories and ideas behind feminine energies that are carried forward, they graced the event with new understanding towards literary narratives.

Excursion

History of the Mughal empire and a strong connect to nature was experienced by the students of IInd and IIIrd year, Department of English, JIMS on their excursion to Mehrauli Archeological Park, exploring romanticism, reminiscing the ancient culture, amalgamating theory and reality, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021

Treasure Hunt

To make concept learning fun for the final year students of English literature, Treasure Hunt Activity was organized, wherein the students were asked to hunt for an object from their homes which justified their understanding of realism. Realism means, "representation of the subject matter truthfully, without artificiality..." The activity impressed the students to apply their minds in observing their surroundings and find the application of their classroom understanding in real life objects. As the students enjoyed their hunt, the activity saw some really creative and insightful object interpretations through; a rubberband jar, a bottle with a lid, a candle, an empty glass, to name a few. Through this activity the student's interpretations concluded realism as a broader concept with multiple facets beyond the photographic depiction of reality.
