English Literature Program

Introduction to English Literature Program

This course offers an in-depth exploration of literary traditions across various periods and genres, including Fiction, Classical and Renaissance Poetry, and American Novels. Students will study English Literature from the 14th to 20th Centuries, gaining insights into themes of these times. The curriculum further includes studies in criticism and theory, providing tools for literary analysis. Additionally, it covers a broad range of British and American poetry and drama.

Spanning extensive historical periods, the course includes an exploration of key literary developments and their socio-cultural contexts. Students will also engage with literature through the lens of World and Indian cinema, enabling exploration of critical theoretical and contextual approaches to film and theatre. Other focus areas include Value-Added, Ability Enhancement and Skill Enhancement courses which help students to appreciate the values and goals of holistic personal development. These courses are designed to broaden students' knowledge and help them acquire practical skills that complement their academic pursuits. Also, students engage in Post colonial studies, which explore the literature and cultural expressions of marginalized communities. This course lays a great emphasis on dissertation, which helps the students to develop critical acumen towards research studies and conduct research in the most ethical manner.

This course offers students a deep understanding of literature, culture, and society across diverse contexts. Through exploration of Indian and regional literature, modernist works, and women's literature, students gain insights into belief systems, gender equality, and translation issues. Studies in Modern European Drama, colonial history, and post-colonial literature enhance comprehension of socio-political dynamics and identity issues. The course also covers literary theory and criticism, fostering analytical skills and theoretical understanding. Additionally, the students undertake summer internships that enable them to acquire hands-on work experience in lucrative and relevant fields like Creative Writing and Digital Marketing. In short, this course provides exposure to the themes of youth, gender and identity, cultivating cultural awareness and critical perspectives alongside hands-on experience for rounded development.

A far less available course in India, the 2-year Diploma in English Literature at JCC Rohini is a specialised course that covers a slightly abridged version of the 3-year course. The course aims to provide a foundational understanding of English literature and language skills in a shorter timeframe. As such, the syllabus is more condensed and focuses on core areas. This interdisciplinary course offers students a deep understanding of how literature, history, culture, and society intersect. Through studying diverse literary genres and historical periods, students explore the evolution of ideas and societal norms. By critically analysing texts, they gain insights into the historical, economic and socio-political contexts influencing literary production. Additionally, the course enhances language proficiency through French language and culture and explores contemporary gender dynamics in literature. To sum it up, this course equips students with analytical skills, cultural literacy, and critical thinking for academic success and engaged citizenship.

MIRAGE functions as the annual theatre showcase, designed to bring literature to life through creative reinterpretation of iconic plays on stage. It serves as a platform for exploration of performance, deeper engagement with dramatic texts, and the development of confidence, collaboration, and expressive skills through experiential learning.

The annual theatre event MIRAGE features student performances drawn from significant dramatic and narrative works such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi, O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi, and Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart. The event includes a choir performance that contributes to a harmonious and reflective opening. A central highlight remains The Yellow Wallpaper – A Mind Unraveling, which presents a powerful depiction of a woman’s gradual descent into madness, engaging with themes of mental health and the silenced role of women in society. The performances collectively reflect students’ creativity, literary understanding, and stage presence.

At the Partition Museum, the focus remains on the gendered dimensions of displacement, drawing upon oral histories and material artefacts as primary texts. This is complemented by an engagement with Sunder Nursery, where Mughal-era architectural heritage and biodiversity serve as a lens to examine nature as a resilient historical archive.

The Department’s magazine Reflections serves as a platform for publishing creative and critical student work through bi-annual Spring and Fall editions organised around thematic cores. The magazine encourages articulation of ideas, experimentation with literary forms, and the development of authorial voice, fostering originality and sustained literary engagement.

Annual Edition 2026 (Theme: Contemporary Humanism)

The Department of English proudly launched the 12th issue of its annual magazine Reflections: Blossom in Unison, centred on the thought-provoking theme "Contemporary Humanism". The magazine is a rich compilation of articles, poems, and diverse literary expressions contributed by both students and faculty members of the department, reflecting a wide range of perspectives on the theme. It acts as a bridge between traditional values and the complexities of the 2020s. It moves beyond the historical focus on the individual and instead interrogates our collective existence in a world shaped by rapid technological shifts, environmental crises, and a renewed search for shared meaning.

The Editorial and Design Team comprised enthusiastic students from across all years, including Drishti Arora, Gurbani Kaur, Sejal Dabas, Aditi Apte, Shorya Kumar, Harshita Baid, Mahi Khan, and Suhani Solanki. Their creative efforts were guided by Mr Sanjay Chopra and Dr Shivani Duggal, under the overall supervision of Dr Anuja Thakar, Head of the Department of English. The magazine was formally launched on 7th April 2026 in the college lawns amidst the beauty of nature. The event celebrated the literary talents of the department and highlighted the importance of creative expression in engaging with contemporary human values.

Building on the notion of limitless potential, this volume brings together diverse creative expressions that foreground resilience, imagination, and especially women’s voices. The works collectively celebrate the idea of possibility beyond boundaries. The edition traverses themes of identity, aspiration, and self-discovery, offering perspectives that challenge limitations and reimagine freedom. It's aim was to showcase the gender inequalities within society through a dystopian narrative where men suffer the same ordeal women go through at every nook and corner of their lives. By reversing the gender roles, we try to question the gender norms shoveled down the throats of women by patriarchal forces within the society and also pin-point explicitly the hollowness behind the same.

The street play on sanitation and hygiene was organised by the students of the Department of English on November 29 near Rohini Sector 3 local park to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and hygienic living conditions. The Department hosted an enriching interdisciplinary guest lecture on "Intersections of Text and Performance: An Academic Inquiry into Indian Drama and Stagecraft." Dr. Avani Bhatnagar, Assistant Professor of English at Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi), deliver an insightful session on the intricate relationship between text and performance, and the art of transforming drama into theatrical excellence.

The lecture series continued with a comprehensive and insightful session on the Indian Knowledge System, delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Jha, Director, School of Liberal Arts, Amity University, Haryana. The fourth session of the Literary Lecture Series “New Voices, New Questions: Literature Beyond the Pages” was held on February 10, 2026, featuring an engaging lecture by Mr. Lalit Aditya Kaushal, Senior Program Lead at Rayat Bahra University. The session, titled “Understanding Stories as Strategy: Integrating Narrative Theory with Organizational Practices,” explored the intersection of literature and management.

Mr. Kaushal skillfully connected narrative theory and the role of storytelling with key concepts in advertising, strategy development and general management. The session concluded with a psychological test that assessed an individual’s personality and its relevance to various management roles. The lecture was both thought-provoking and interactive, offering a unique fusion of two seemingly distinct fields.

The Department of English at Jagannath Community College organised the fifth session of its Literary Lecture Series, themed "Digital Narratives on Climate Change”, on March 10, 2026.
